Shaginappi Lodge was the Order of the Arrow (OA) lodge serving the Badger Council (headquartered in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin) from the mid-1930s until the early 1970s. Its history is defined by its association with Camp Shaginappi and its eventual consolidation into a larger regional lodge.
Founding and Council Affiliation
Establishment: Shaginappi Lodge was chartered to the Badger Council, which served Scouts in Fond du Lac, Dodge, and Washington Counties.
Name Origin: The name "Shaginappi" is an Algonquin word meaning "buckskin thong".
Camp Connection: The lodge was closely tied to Camp Shaginappi, located on a historic 13-acre (later expanded to over 100 acres) peninsula on Lake Winnebago that had originally been the site of a Native American village known as Calumet.
The 1973 Merger
The lodge’s independent history ended due to a massive council consolidation in Wisconsin:
Dissolution: On June 30, 1973, the Badger Council officially ceased operations.
Formation of Bay-Lakes Council: Badger Council merged with councils from Oshkosh, Menasha, Green Bay, Manitowoc, and Sheboygan to form the Bay-Lakes Council.
Lodge Consolidation: Following the council merger, the OA lodges from these regions consolidated into a new, single lodge for the Bay-Lakes Council, Awase #61.
Legacy of the Lodge and Camp
Property Transfer: After the 1973 merger, the Bay-Lakes Council returned Camp Shaginappi to the Fond du Lac Rotary Club, which had originally organized the site for Scouting.
Current Status: Today, the site of the former camp and lodge is known as Shaginappi Park, a 100-acre natural area and county park in Fond du Lac County that features a restored lodge building used for public rentals and events.
Fond du Lac's Boy Scouts, under Badger Council, used Camp Shaginappi, a significant location for Sea Scouting and general camping, which later led to events moving to Camp Sinawa and Camp Rokilio as Shaginappi closed, while the primary regional camp for many years became Bear Paw Scout Camp under the merged Bay-Lakes Council.
Key Camps Used by Fond du Lac Scouts:
Camp Shaginappi: This was a key camp for Fond du Lac-area Scouts, especially Sea Scouts, hosting major regattas before its closure.
Camp Sinawa & Camp Rokilio: After Shaginappi closed, events moved to these camps (near St. Nazianz and Plymouth, respectively), with Camp Rokilio being a long-standing camp founded by service clubs.
Bear Paw Scout Camp: Now a major camp within the larger Bay-Lakes Council (which absorbed the Badger Council), Bear Paw serves thousands of Scouts from northeastern Wisconsin and is a primary destination for summer camp and activities.
In essence, while Fond du Lac had its own important camps like Shaginappi, the scouting landscape shifted, with many local units now attending Bear Paw under the current Bay-Lakes Council.
